2012 HSA Contribution Limits and High Deductible Health Plan Rules

HSA 2012 contribution limits for Health Saving Accounts (HSAs) and cost-sharing amounts for HSA qualified high deductible health plans (HDHPs) have just been announced by the Internal Revenue Service.

  • 2012 HSA annual contribution limits are: $3,100 for individuals and $6,250 for families. Currently, 2011 HSA annual contribution limits are: $3,050 for individuals and $6,150 for families.
  • 2012 HSA maximum out of pocket (deductibles, co-payments and co-insurance) for HSA qualified high deductible health plans (HDHPs) are: $6,050 for individuals and $12,100 for families. Currently, 2011 HSA maximum out of pocket are: $5,950 for individuals and $11,900 for families.
  • The minimum 2012 deductibles for HSA qualified high deductible health plans remains unchanged at $1,200 for individuals and $2,400 for families.
  • The “catch-up” contribution limit for individuals age 55 and older remains unchanged at $1,000. (This money is in addition to the regular maximum contribution allowed for each calendar year. Married couples can each make the allowable “Catch-Up” contributions as long as both are at least 55 years old, however, two HSA’s must be established).
