The cost of looking good just got more expensive.  A 10% tax on indoor tanning services is now in effect to help pay for the new healthcare law.  The tanning tax went into effect July 1, 2010.

According to the NFIB, National Federation of Independent Business, the 10% tanning tax was added very late in the healthcare debate after Congress rejected the originally proposed 5% tax on elective cosmetic procedures. Analysis conducted by the Indoor Tanning Association noted the retail side of this industry is made up of classic “mom and pop” owner/ operators. Not only are the majority of these small business owners women, but as many as 75% of the employees and customers are women, as well.  Each year about 10% of the American public visits an indoor tanning facility.

The new healthcare law also contains a number of taxes to help fund the sweeping changes that will take effect over the next four years.
